This recipe for Dad’s Crispy Waffles will be a staple at your home. These homemade, Belgian style waffles are everything you’d want in a waffle; they are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Why you Will Love These Waffles
Waffles are the quintessential breakfast food. But really, they can be enjoyed as a breakfast-for-dinner type of situation, which is what we do at my house! We like to make waffles for Sunday dinners and my kids all look forward to it. These waffles have the perfect texture with a crispy outer and fluffy inside.
How to Pack Waffles for School Lunches

We also pack leftover waffles in our children’s lunches for school; we pair them with some fresh fruit and breakfast chicken sausage links. You can easily pack some syrup in a leak proof container, but you can also consider packing a tablespoon of peanut butter (or other nut butter) for them to dip the waffles in. Keep in mind that it makes it easier to pack waffles when you cut them into waffle “sticks,” and it also makes them more amenable to dipping.

Waffles pair perfectly with maple syrup, whipped cream, fresh fruit, sprinkles, chocolate chips, or whatever your favorite waffle topping is! I especially enjoy these with syrup, whipped cream and freshly sliced strawberries. Yum!
My family really enjoys using these naturally colored sprinkles for our waffles. We also use these sprinkles for an ice cream topping and to decorate our birthday cakes. They are also gluten free, vegan and nut free.
Create a Waffle Bar

Have you ever hosted or attended a waffle party? We hosted a waffle party for my son’s 7th birthday party last year and it was a hit. I really like to serve foods that people can customize to their liking and waffles work well for this (similar to a taco bar or salad bar).
When you set up a waffle bar, you will want to offer the traditional waffle toppings like maple syrup and whipped cream. But don’t forget to add some fun options like sprinkles, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows or even powdered sugar. Some healthier options include fresh fruits like sliced strawberries, banana halves for slicing, and blueberries or other berries. You can also consider offering nut butters (warmed so it can be drizzled), or chopped nuts to sprinkle on top of the waffles.
When you set up your waffle bar, you can make the presentation extra fun by putting ingredients in pretty bowls or in glass containers like the one in the photo above.
For an additional idea, these beautiful jars can also be used for oatmeal toppings too. If you eat oatmeal or other hot breakfast cereals on a regular basis, why not put some cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, chopped nuts, brown sugar or dried fruits in some jars?
Equipment you will Need to Make Waffles

You will need a waffle iron to cook Belgian style waffles, and we have really appreciated our double waffle maker by Cuisinart. We are a family of 5, so cooking two waffles at once has been a game changer. And I am sure you can imagine how important a double waffle maker would be for a waffle party.
Before pouring the waffle batter on the iron, I recommend using a cooking oil spray to help prevent the waffles from sticking. We like to use Chosen Foods Avocado spray. This oil spray literally has just one ingredient, which is avocado oil. Do you remember back in the day when stores sold those oil sprays with about 10 additives? Yikes.
You will also want to make sure you have cooling racks to set the hot waffles on. This will help prevent the waffles from getting soggy.
How to Make Your Waffles Crispy
Speaking of soggy waffles…Never. Eat. Soggy. Waffles.
When you imagine biting into the perfect waffle, I am sure you think of a waffle with a crispy outer and a fluffy inner. To be sure your waffles have that crispy bite, you will need to add the corn starch that the recipe calls for. The vegetable oil also adds crunchy texture. And lastly, make sure you cool the waffles on a cooling rack as mentioned above. If you pile them onto a plate, it will trap steam which will in turn soften the waffles.
